🧀 THE HUNDRED-YEAR CHEESE · level 3 · 3-4 hours

For a hundred years Marrowdown has aged one wheel of cheese in a sealed cellar, and tonight it is cut. Four hundred people are standing on the mound above the cellar, and the floor has just given way. The wheel is thirty feet down, it weighs four hundred pounds, and there are three lanterns in town with four hours of oil in them.

Once a year Marrowdown lays out everything the Weir has caught, and whatever nobody claims by noon is auctioned. This year the catch includes a church door from no church in Lowmere, and at eleven this morning it was sold to a man who wants it for a pie counter. He has the receipt.
